Why ride teh Northwest
Vietnam’s Most Iconic Riding Country
Northwest Vietnam is where the country’s highest peaks, most dramatic passes, and most traditional hill-tribe cultures converge. Stretching west from Hanoi through Hoa Binh, Mai Chau, Son La, and Lai Chau, the northwest rewards riders with road after road of sweeping mountain curves, deep river valleys, and terraced hillsides that turn gold at harvest time.
The Tram Ton Pass above Sapa is the highest mountain road in Vietnam. The Khau Pha Pass is one of the four legendary “great passes” of the north. The road to Dien Bien Phu cuts through some of the emptiest, most beautiful highland scenery in Southeast Asia — and carries the weight of one of the twentieth century’s most decisive battles.
Beyond the riding, the northwest is home to dozens of ethnic minority groups — the Black Hmong of Sapa, the White Thai of the Mai Chau Valley, the Muong villages of Pu Luong — each with their own language, textiles, and traditions. Overnight stays in local homestays and family guesthouses put you at the centre of that culture, not on the outside looking in.
We Ride Vietnam has been guiding riders through the northwest since 2015. Our guides know every back road shortcut, every unmissable viewpoint, and every hidden valley that keeps our riders coming back.

Common questions
Northwest Vietnam Motorbike Tours — Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to ride Northwest Vietnam?
October and November are peak season — the rice terraces are golden at harvest and the skies are clear after the summer rains. March to May is the second best window, with warming temperatures and the flowering mustard and plum blossoms in the highlands. December to February can be cold above 1,500m, and June to August brings rain and some road closures on unpaved tracks. That said, we run northwest tours year-round and always plan routes around the conditions.
How difficult are the northwest roads?
Northwest Vietnam covers everything from smooth national highways to rough mountain tracks, depending on the tour. The Northwest Loop and Sapa tours are mostly paved with some gravel sections. We match the route to your experience — beginners ride the easier highland highways, experienced riders can add off-road trails and steeper passes. No previous Vietnam experience is needed, but basic motorcycle competence is required.
Do I need my own motorbike?
Our routes follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail as closely as modern roads allow. Some original trail sections are now paved highway; others remain jungle tracks accessible only by dirt road. Our guides know which sections of the original route are still rideable and factor these into every itinerary.
Are the northwest tours suitable for pillion passengers?
Yes. Several riders on every tour bring a partner as pillion. The bikes are set up for two, and the support truck is always close if someone wants a break from the back seat on a long mountain day.
How far in advance should I book?
For private tours, 2–4 weeks notice is usually enough outside peak season. For October–November departures, book 2–3 months ahead. We run scheduled group departures throughout the year — check the Join a Group page for upcoming dates.
