Why ride the Ho Chi Minh Trail
Vietnam’s Most Legendary Road
The Ho Chi Minh Trail is more than a road — it’s a 2,000-kilometre corridor of jungle tracks, mountain passes, and river crossings that stretches the length of Vietnam and into Laos. During the Vietnam War it was the lifeline of the north, a network of paths used to move troops and supplies under heavy American bombing. Today it is one of the greatest motorbike routes in the world.
Riding the trail takes you through landscapes that most travellers never see. The Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — hides the world’s largest cave systems beneath its jungle-covered karst. The Hai Van Pass offers one of the most photographed coastal panoramas in Southeast Asia. Remote Khe Sanh and the DMZ bring the history of the war to life in a way no museum can replicate.
We Ride Vietnam has been guiding riders along the Ho Chi Minh Trail since 2015. Our routes follow the original trail as closely as modern roads allow, taking in the landmarks, communities, and landscapes that make this journey truly unforgettable. Every tour is fully guided, fully supported, and departs from Hanoi.

Common questions
Ho Chi Minh Trail Tour FAQ
How difficult is riding the Ho Chi Minh Trail?
The trail mixes sealed mountain roads with unpaved jungle tracks depending on the tour. Our Hanoi to Hoi An 7-day tour is suitable for riders with basic motorbike experience. The Laos cross-border and Hanoi to Saigon tours involve more off-road sections and suit riders with some unpaved road experience. We assess all riders before departure and match you to the right bike.
What safety gear is included in the tour price?
All safety gear is included in your tour price at no extra cost. Every rider receives a full-face helmet, riding jacket, gloves, knee pads, and a waterproof poncho for the mountain weather. We don’t cut corners on protection — the Ha Giang roads demand proper gear and we make sure every rider is fully equipped before we leave Hanoi.
Do tours run the full length of the original trail?
Our routes follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail as closely as modern roads allow. Some original trail sections are now paved highway; others remain jungle tracks accessible only by dirt road. Our guides know which sections of the original route are still rideable and factor these into every itinerary.
What is the best time of year to ride the Ho Chi Minh Trail?
February to August is the ideal window for the full trail. Central Vietnam has a distinct wet season from September to January that can make mountain road sections challenging. Our guides monitor conditions year-round and adjust routes when needed. Contact us for current road condition advice before booking.
Are the wartime sites on the trail included in the tour?
Yes. The DMZ, Khe Sanh Combat Base, and the Vinh Moc tunnels are included in the Hanoi to Hoi An and Hanoi to Saigon tours. Your guide provides full historical context at each site — these are not rushed stops but key parts of the itinerary.
