Ha Giang Off-Road Motorbike Tour
The Ha Giang off-road motorbike tour is widely regarded as the best adventure ride in Southeast Asia — a raw, remote loop through limestone karst mountains, high-altitude passes and ethnic minority villages close to the Chinese border.
Ha Giang Motorbike Tour from 8 to 10 Days
Tour Overview
The Ha Giang motorbike tour covers approximately 1,600 km of northern Vietnam’s most remote and rewarding roads. The first half of the route crosses the northeast border region — quiet back roads through Tay and Nung minority villages, past the thundering Ban Gioc Waterfall and around the forests of Ba Be National Park. The second half climbs into Ha Giang province, riding the famous Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Geopark — a landscape of jagged limestone peaks, deep river gorges and H’mong hill-tribe villages unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. The tour finishes in Sapa before a comfortable overnight train returns you to Hanoi. Every day brings a completely different landscape and experience.
Riding Style and Difficulty
The Ha Giang off-road motorbike route is best suited to experienced riders. The tour combines long mountain road sections with off-road dirt tracks, river crossings and high-altitude passes. Road conditions vary significantly with weather — dry season tracks are firm and manageable while wet season riding adds real technical challenge. Our guides monitor conditions daily and adjust each day’s route accordingly, and there is always a paved alternative when conditions make off-road riding unsafe. A support mechanic rides sweep with every tour, so a breakdown never ends your day.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1 — Hanoi to That Khe (~160 km)
Depart Hanoi early morning on quiet back roads heading northeast toward Lang Son. The city gives way quickly to rural countryside and forested hills. After a local lunch stop we ride to That Khe — a small border-region town that sees almost no tourists — and check into the guesthouse for the night.
Day 2 — That Khe to Quang Uyen (~120 km)
A spectacular day through remote mountain paths and Tay minority villages. The roads are quiet, the scenery dramatic and the riding excellent. Overnight in Quang Uyen.
Day 3 — Quang Uyen to Cao Bang (~80 km)
Shorter day through rugged karst terrain, arriving in Cao Bang by early afternoon with time to explore the riverside town before dinner. Overnight in a hotel with hot showers and Wi-Fi.
Day 4 — Cao Bang to Ban Gioc Waterfall to Ba Be Lake (~160 km)
One of the great days of the tour — morning ride to Ban Gioc, Vietnam’s most spectacular waterfall on the Chinese border, then an afternoon crossing to Ba Be Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Vietnam and a stunning overnight stop.
Day 5 — Ba Be Lake to Bao Lac (~150 km)
A challenging day on off-road trails through thick forest and remote hill-tribe communities. The roads into Bao Lac are some of the most dramatic on the entire tour. Overnight in Bao Lac.
Day 6 — Bao Lac to Meo Vac to Dong Van (~120 km)
The mountain roads climb steeply as we cross into Ha Giang province proper. The Ma Pi Leng Pass between Meo Vac and Dong Van is one of the most famous roads in Vietnam — sheer drops, jagged peaks and views that stop you in your tracks. Overnight in Dong Van old quarter.
Day 7 — Dong Van to Ha Giang to Bac Ha (~160 km)
Riding down from the plateau through Ha Giang town and northwest to the Bac Ha highlands — famous for its colourful Sunday market where H’mong, Dao and Giay people come to trade in full traditional dress.
Day 8 — Bac Ha to Sapa (~100 km)
A scenic ride through terraced rice fields and mountain passes to Sapa, with time to explore the town and surrounding valleys in the afternoon. Overnight in a hotel in Sapa.
Day 9 — Sapa Exploration and Overnight Train
A free morning to explore Sapa — visit Cat Cat village, the local market or simply take in the views of Fansipan. Afternoon ride down to Lao Cai for the overnight soft sleeper train back to Hanoi.

Ha Giang Off-Road Motorbike Tour FAQ
How difficult is the Ha Giang off-road motorbike tour?
This tour is best suited to experienced riders who are comfortable on both paved mountain roads and off-road dirt tracks. Some sections — particularly around Bao Lac and the passes into Meo Vac — involve technical riding that will challenge even confident off-roaders in wet conditions. Our guides always adapt the route to the group’s ability and a paved alternative is always available. If you are unsure whether your riding level is suitable, contact us before booking and we will give you an honest assessment.
How far is Ha Giang from Hanoi?
Ha Giang city is approximately 320 km north of Hanoi — around 5 to 6 hours by road. However our tour does not go directly to Ha Giang. We take a longer northeast route through Lang Son, Cao Bang and Ba Be Lake first, covering approximately 1,600 km over 8 to 10 days before finishing in Sapa and returning to Hanoi by overnight train.
How much does the Ha Giang off-road motorbike tour cost?
Prices start from US$1,480 per person for the 8-day tour on a Honda XR150, up to US$2,230 per person for the 10-day tour on a Honda CRF300L or CB500X. All prices are fully all-inclusive — bike, guide, mechanic, all meals, accommodation, fuel, riding gear and permits. A 50% solo supplement applies for private tours. Contact us for group discounts for 5 or more riders.
What is the best time of year to ride the Ha Giang loop?
October to April is the best season for this tour. October and November are particularly spectacular when the buckwheat flowers bloom across the Dong Van plateau and the rice terraces are golden before harvest. March and April bring warmer weather and clear skies. We run tours year-round — the rainy season (May to September) brings lush green scenery but makes some off-road sections more challenging. We adjust the itinerary accordingly.
What motorbikes are available on the Ha Giang tour?
We offer Honda XR150 (lightweight, good for the climbs), Honda CRF250L (the most popular choice for this route), Honda CRF300L (more power for serious off-road riders) and Honda CB500X (touring-oriented with extra power). All bikes are regularly serviced. If you are unsure which bike suits your experience level, contact us and we will recommend the right one.
Is a permit required to ride in Ha Giang?
Yes. Ha Giang province requires a special tourist permit for foreign visitors to ride in the restricted border area near Dong Van and Meo Vac. We arrange all permits on your behalf — they are included in the tour price. You do not need to do anything except provide us with your passport details when booking.
What accommodation is provided on the tour?
Accommodation is a mix of local guesthouses, small hotels and traditional homestays depending on the location. In larger towns like Cao Bang, Dong Van and Sapa you will stay in hotels with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and hot showers. In more remote stops like Ba Be Lake and Bao Lac, accommodation is simpler local guesthouses or homestays — basic but clean and authentic. All accommodation is twin-share and included in the tour price.
Can I do this tour as a solo rider?
Yes — solo riders are welcome. You can join one of our scheduled group departures by checking the Join a Group page, or book a private solo tour with a 50% supplement on the listed price. The Ha Giang route is one of our most popular group tours and there are usually other riders to join throughout the year.
What happens at the end of the tour — how do I get back to Hanoi?
The tour ends in Lao Cai where we board the overnight soft sleeper train to Hanoi, arriving early morning. The train is comfortable, safe and a great way to rest after 8 to 10 days of riding. The train fare is included in the tour price.

EXCELLENT Based on 159 reviews Posted on Nick bakkerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What an insight into the life of Vietnam’s and Laos culture. Plenty of interesting places we went to and past through. Learnt a great deal about the Vietnam war. All accommodation was A/C thank god which made us feel rested ready for the following day to look forward to. The river crossings and bridges were a highlight including the well earned swim half way through the trails on some days. Great pace and bikes were fine. Was challenging at times and was nice change to be in the mountains with mist and drizzle on the last day. You won’t go hungry or thirsty. Had good pace with leader and sweeper very competent.Posted on chris carrollTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had a fantastic four days custom tour north east of Hanoi guided by Duc. Every type of terrain, great experiences including home stays, and interactions with locals aided by Duc. Honda 250CFR was solid, reliable and powerful enough for all conditions. Loved it.Posted on Robert AppsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Returned last week from another amazing trip with Hai and his team from We Ride Vietnam. Fantastic scenery, with support, food and accommodation to match. Vietnam really is a country of contrasts and with wonderful people, and there can be no better way to experience it, than from a motorcycle. Thanks again to Hai, our guide Son, mechanic/guide Long (please accept any spelling errors with names here) and our enterprising cameraman for showing us more of their wonderful country.Posted on Heike AppsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. An amazing holiday through NE Vietnam on Honda CRF 250s. The We Ride Vietnam crew were professional and looked after us extremely well. The accommodation and food were all excellent. This was my 3rd trip with them. The itinerary was very interesting with something special to see each day. Overall the views were spectacular and I really enjoyed myself. I would recommend We Ride Vietnam to anyone. HeikePosted on al jTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have just returned from a 8 day 7 night Ha Giang loop trip with We Ride Vietnam. Hai and his team did a fantastic job, well organised and very professionally run, we had Son as a guide, Long as our mechanic/guide along with camera man and support vehicle driver. All accommodation and meals were covered for the entire trip along with hotel to bike transfers, the only thing we had to pay for was alcoholic drinks at the end of the day. Before departure each morning our mechanic would check over every bike and have them lined up ready to go. We had 2 different skill levels of riders in our group and both were well and truly catered for, splitting the group up on several occasions to keep all interested. If riding a bike around Vietnam is on your to do list give Hai at We Ride Vietnam a call, your won't regret it ever! Hai and the team are amazing, did the 8 days tour in North Vietnam and honestly the best experience ever!Posted on Heather KalishTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We Ride Vietnam is an amazing company to tour with if you have an inability to stay in one place when visiting a new and beautiful country. Our tour guide, Tan, was knowledgeable and answered every question we had about Vietnam, so we not only saw a great majority of the NorthEast, but we also learned about the culture and lifestyle of the people. No need to bring fancy equipment if new to riding or scared of overpacking, WRV provided pants and jacket with hard pads, gloves with knuckle armor, and DOT certified helmet. Even though WVR is known for their adventure tours, my dad and I were new riders, and got to experience a beginner journey through the mountains and across rivers, past rice paddies and through remote villages, all without missing out on the adventure. Our tour guide, Tan, was an experienced motorcycle trainer and did not hesitate to give us advice and stopping when needed, being so patient with us and helping us the whole way. The home stays with families and home cooked meals was a unique experience, and my dad’s allergy was relayed to the cooks who made special care to make something we both could eat. We had a square 3 meals a day, and stopped for fresh smoothies, juices and Vietnamese coffee at least twice a day during our journey, making sure we were hydrated and rested and rode in comfort. Our coordinator, Hai, took care of accommodations we needed arranged, and his special relationships with businesses around the country set us up with reliable and trusted transportation and lodging. Could not recommend these guys more, was incredibly impressed and never concerned for my safety, health, or needs. Had a great trip, and became a better rider through We Ride Vietnam.Posted on Cyrus Chiu (Colossal Image)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Seven days, 1,500km, and not a single missed turn. Hai and the We Ride Vietnam team delivered a masterclass in adventure from Hanoi to Hoi An, blending raw gravel trails with an immaculate itinerary. The bikes were rugged and well-equipped, backed by a "sweeper" mechanic who could swap a flat in 15 minutes flat. From every perfectly timed local meal to Hai’s attentive help with hotel bookings beyond the tour dates, the precision was total. If you want the real Vietnam on two wheels with a guide who operates like a tactical genius, this is the only way to ride!Posted on Eric ChungTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The We Ride Vietnam motorcycle journey is a 6 stars Father and Son experience, taking advantage of the natural and privileged scenic routes with all kinds of terrains and road conditions of Vietnam. Our tour group of 4 experienced all climate elements in full 7 days ride, the most adrenaline pump being the time we dashed through the reserved park in thick foggy condition. The hardware Honda 250cc single cylinder bike is more than capable to carry a 200 lbs Dad. Gears like helmet, gloves , jacket and pants provide enough protection for slip and fall. Meals are good and all original Vietnamese cuisine. Perhaps next time, we can try the more exotic options. We didn’t know such options exist prior to this journey. There are numerous coffee breaks and ample gas fill stops during the journey. Hai the organizer and leader was fun, amicable, knowledgeable and able to assess our capabilities and skills and to adjust accordingly. Hai is always on time and brought us all to all destinations according to plans. Hai and Mechanics Hué are dynamic duals. Hué is a quiet , no nonsense defense for us all. His problems solving skills is top notched. He changed a flat tire for my son’s bike in less than 15 minutes. Thanks Hai and Hué for giving us this very memorable tour and we look forward to another one when opportunity comes.
